How Many Types of Plastering Are There?

Depending on the requirements, be it weather resistance, limitation of budget, interior appeal, or eco-conscious design, there are many types of plastering used in modern construction where each type is suited for a specific function, surface, and finish. These are:

1. Cement Plastering

One of the most widely used types, cement plastering involves a mix of cement, sand, and water. Applied in a single or double coat, it offers strong adhesion and durability. It is commonly used for both internal and external surfaces and allows various textures such as sand-faced, smooth cast, or roughcast finishes. It is highly effective in resisting moisture, wear, and climate effects.

2. Gypsum Plastering

Also known as Plaster of Paris, gypsum plaster is made from calcium sulphate dihydrate. It's best suited for interior walls due to its fast-setting nature and smooth finish. It is also preferred in settings where hygiene is a priority like hospitals or kitchens because of its clean application and fire-resistant nature. However, gypsum plaster is not recommended for external surfaces due to its limited resistance to moisture and heat.

3. Mud Plastering

An eco-friendly and traditional option, mud plaster is composed of natural soil, often mixed with straw or dung. It’s breathable, provides excellent thermal insulation, and gives a rustic, earthy aesthetic. Although not commonly used in urban home building projects, it remains relevant in sustainable and rural architecture.

4. Lime Plastering

Made using lime, sand, and sometimes a small amount of cement, this type of plaster sets through carbonation when exposed to air. It is flexible, breathable, and resistant to cracking thus making it ideal for old buildings and structures requiring restoration. Lime plaster also helps reduce carbon emissions compared to conventional cement plastering.

5. Waterproof Plaster

Designed to resist water, this plaster is ideal for moisture-prone areas such as bathrooms and basements. It usually contains additives like pulverised alum and soft soap, which chemically react to seal pores on the wall surface. This prevents leakage, mould growth, and structural damage due to moisture.

6. Stucco Plastering

Stucco plastering is a decorative form of wall plaster made traditionally with lime, sand, and water. In modern construction, it often uses Portland cement as the base material. Known for its ornamental application and fine finish, stucco is typically applied in three coats reaching a total thickness of around 25 mm. Each coat must dry fully before the next is applied. This layered process creates a textured, durable surface suitable for both interiors and exteriors in architectural design.

How to Do Plastering on Brick Wall: Step-by-Step Process

For a flawless finish, plastering must be done methodically. Below is a simplified guide on how to do plastering on brick wall and other surfaces.

1. Surface Preparation

The wall must be thoroughly cleaned of dust, loose particles, or previous layers of damaged plaster. For replastering, old material must be carefully removed to ensure good adhesion.

2. Priming the Surface

A PVA (Polyvinyl acetate) adhesive is often applied to help the new plaster bond well. The surface should be slightly damp—not dry—before application begins.

3. Mixing the Plaster

Accuracy in mixing is key. The mixture should be lump-free and smooth. Using a mechanical mixer helps maintain uniformity and avoids contamination.

4. Application of First Coat

Using a hawk board and plastering trowel, the first coat is applied evenly from the bottom up. Constant pressure and consistent strokes ensure proper bonding with the wall surface. Once this coat is complete, it is leveled using a straight edge or trowel.

5. Finishing the Surface

Once the first coat is dry, and the imperfections, if any, are smoothed out, a second, thinner coat is then applied. A light spray of water helps the trowel glide over the surface for a polished finish. Once fully dry, any rough edges can be perfected with the use of sandpaper.

In modern construction, plastering remains one of the most essential finishing processes equally critical to the strength and appearance of any building. From traditional mud plastering to high-performance cement plastering, each type serves a specific need in home building.
