This coolness indicates that the cement is fresh and hasn’t been compromised by moisture or improper storage.

2. Float Test

The Float Test is a basic purity check that can be performed using just a bucket of water. Take a small amount of cement and gently drop it into the water. Good quality cement will float momentarily before sinking gradually. If it sinks immediately, it may contain impurities. On the other hand, if it continues to float for too long, it may be excessively mixed with dust or lightweight materials. In the case of PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement), the presence of fly ash may result in some floating particles, which is normal.

3. Date of Packaging

Always begin by checking the manufacturing date printed on the cement bag. Cement starts to degrade once packed, due to unavoidable exposure to moisture in the air. As a rule of thumb, use cement within three months of its packaging date. If it has crossed this period, its strength may have reduced.

4. Visual Inspection

Good quality cement should be uniform in color, generally grey with a slight greenish tint. Any visible lumps suggest the presence of moisture, which triggers a chemical reaction that weakens the cement. If you find hard lumps, do not use that batch.

5. Consistency Check

Mix about 100 grams of cement with a little water to form a stiff paste. Shape it into a small cake with defined edges. Submerge it slowly into water. If the paste maintains its shape and doesn’t crack or disintegrate after 24 hours, the cement has acceptable consistency and adhesive quality.
